Founding Board Member Emeritus
It is with deep respect and appreciation that we recognize the legacy of our friend and esteemed colleague R. Clayton McWhorter of Nashville, Tennessee. A healthcare industry pioneer, recognized globally for his contributions to healthcare, Mr. McWhorter served as a charter member of the ProxsysRx board of directors and served the company faithfully until the time of his death.
“Clayton was truly a visionary, and we are honored to have had the opportunity to work alongside him. He was a trusted advisor, always bringing keen insights and new ideas to the table. He was also a treasured friend,” said ProxsysRx founder and CEO George B. Salem. “Clayton’s leadership and passion for improving the healthcare system distinguish him as a game-changer. He was one of a kind and we are privileged to have known him. We will miss him dearly,” said Salem.
Clayton McWhorter is the former founder, chairman, and CEO of HealthTrust, Inc., and former chairman of Hospital Corporation of America (NYSE: HCA). Mr. McWhorter retired from HCA in 1996 as chairman of HCA with the vision to create a firm to serve the need of investing in and advising healthcare entrepreneurs that were seeking to serve the healthcare industry.
Mr. McWhorter’s wealth of experience and relationships in the industry served as an effective platform to create Clayton Associates. Mr. McWhorter served as the company’s founder and chairman emeritus until the time of his death. HealthTrust was a success story in the Healthcare industry. Known for taking the smaller, less profitable hospitals within the HCA family of hospitals, Mr. McWhorter led a team of executives and spun off these facilities from HCA and turned them into profitable and sustainable community-based hospitals that effectively served many communities around the country. HealthTrust later merged back into HCA where Mr. McWhorter served as the chairman. Prior to HealthTrust, Mr. McWhorter served in various executive leadership roles at HCA including its chief operating officer and vice president of domestic operations. Prior to his corporate role in Nashville, TN, he served as an HCA hospital administrator in various markets. Mr. McWhorter earned his B.S. Degree in pharmacy from Samford University. The McWhorter School of Pharmacy at Samford University was named in his honor.
